AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
(Chisinau, Moldova)The LSM after school program is an educational program which was launched in 2008 in order to offer underprivileged and at-risk children the chance to learn and to expand their academic skill so that by staying after school and with the help of a teacher, they can succeed in their studies. The program provides textbooks and school supplies necessary to get their work done. In addition, children can enjoy a warm environment and a hot lunch every day. This is crucial to their development because most of these children come from backgrounds where parents abuse alcohol or are invalids and are unable to care for their children nor to provide them with sufficient nourishment or basic school supplies.
Mrs.Claudia, Principal school, Mircesti village - “We have never had 100% attendance at our school because the children from ASP come from vulnerable families and they lack school supplies. Most of them did not receive a proper nutrition which impeded them from attending school regularly. As a result from participating in the “After School” program their schoolwork and behavior significantly improved. I am happy to see their present results and their level of knowledge growing. Its a unique program in the Republic of Moldova. Thank you for giving these children the opportunity to participate in the ASP and providing education in our small village.”
Mrs. Zinaida, teacher. “This project was able to increase children’s interest for school, as well as their level of learning. The relationships between them became closer and tighter . Daily they approach us with school and life-related questions that concern them. Besides the fact that we assist them with their homework, within this project, we act as counselors offering children advice and support”.
Iura, his father passed away. There are three children in the family and they stay with their ill grandmother. Often times Iura came to school hungry and was academically behind compared to his peers, but since the time when he started attending the After School Program, his grades went up from C to B. “I like coming here a lot and do my homework because in this warm environment I receive a good meal and when I have questions, the teacher assists me.”
